- Understand the professional, legal and ethical considerations surrounding venepuncture and cannulation.
- Identify suitable veins using knowledge of venous anatomy.
- Select appropriate veins using recognised assessment criteria.
- Understand the different blood collection systems and equipment, including vacuum systems and butterfly needles.
- Recognise and manage common complications including haematoma, extravasation and needlestick injuries.
- Apply safe working practices to minimise risks to patients and healthcare staff.
- Complete accurate documentation and competency assessments.
